Thoughts
José Martí
-
Respect for freedom and for the ideas of others, of even the most wretched
being, is my fanaticism. If I die, or if I am killed, that will be the cause.
-
There
is no forgiveness for acts of hatred. Daggers thrust in the name of liberty
are thrust into liberty's heart.
-
Misery is not a private misfortune; it is a public crime.
-
Let
there be justice, and then no one will ask for anything unjust.
-
Well-being is sacred and just, but not at the cost of the well-being of
others. No to war by the rich on the poor, and no to war by the poor against
the rich!
-
Government of one segment of the people, or one class, by another is not
democracy, it is tyranny.
-
In a
country where suffrage is the source of the law, revolution comes from
suffrage.
-
The
art of politics lies in bending and yielding. Only in the essential ideas of
dignity and liberty should one be prickly, like a sea-urchin, and straight,
like a pine.
-
Doublebreasted frockcoats, and humble shirts fit apostles and bandits alike.
-
We do
ourselves honor by honoring others
-
Every
tyranny has at hand one of those learned men to think and write, to justify,
to extenuate, and to disguise.
-
In a
country without freedom literature can only be a mourner or a courtesan.
-
Masks
are good for nothing in a country where the press is free, where the press,
comes out every morning in the cities and blows away masks, like a ghost wind.
- Man enjoys no special
rights because of his race. Say man and all his rights are there included...
Everything that divides people, everything that categorizers or corrals them
is a sin against humanity.
